Comprehensive calibration techniques and automatic calibration

The R&S®ZVB not only offers classic two-port TOSM (Through, Open, Short, Match) calibration – also known as SOLT (Short, Open, Load, Through) – but also a variety of other calibration techniques. Since each test port of the R&S®ZVB is equipped with a measurement receiver and a reference receiver of its own, the analyzer also offers 7‑term calibration techniques largely patented for Rohde&Schwarz. These include TOM (Through, Open, Match), TRL/LRL (Through, Reflect, Line/Line, Reflect, Line), TRM (Through, Reflect, Match), and TNA (Through, Network, Attenuator), which are suitable for calibration in test fixtures or on wafers. Since calibration is performed directly on the DUT plane, any effects from the test fixture are eliminated. The 7‑term calibration techniques offer the advantages of reduced effort and increased measurement accuracy, as they require fewer standards and also allow the use of partially or completely unknown standards.

The new UOSM (Unknown Through, Open, Short, Match) calibration technique allows a through-connection with unknown parameters to be used as a standard. This makes it possible to use any adapter with any types of connectors as a "U", and thus supports calibration of a DUT with different connector types.

Calibration techniques offered by the R&S®ZVB

In addition to the manual calibration techniques described above, Rohde & Schwarz offers calibration units for the automatic calibration of one to four test ports of an R&S®ZVB network analyzer.

Requiring only a single connection and a few operating steps, the automatic calibration units replace complex manual calibrations involving several mechanical standards. The units are ready to operate immediately after being connected and perform complete four-port calibration covering 201 test points in less than 30 seconds. The units come with N or 3.5 mm female connectors.
